Helping "our needest children"

In the mid-'80s Judith Brandlin co-chaired a childcare committee for the United Way in Los Angeles and saw a need for before-school and after-school care. Instead of announcing her committee's findings and going on with the rest of her life, Judith decided to make before- and after-school care a priority in her life. She founded Stone Soup Child Care Programs and the not-for-profit program now provides high quality, dependable and affordable after-school care for more than 4,000 children in 86 schools located in 20 low-income communities in some of the toughest gang neighborhoods in Los Angeles. "Many of these kids grow up with violence daily in their lives. I hope we're making a difference."
