"I realized that
malnutrition could be better explained by political reasons than simply by scientific
issues."
As a new student at Iowa
State, Karin Brandt wanted to help solve the world's hunger problems in
the lab. She soon discovered that her "passion lies more with the policies
that are instituted for food distribution" and promptly switched majors.
Using her double major in political science and international studies, Karin
works with the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods at Iowa State. In her
role with the Center, Karin has learned about partnerships with an non-governmental
organization which is assisting rural farmers in Uganda improve agricultural
livelihoods. She has also researched refugee and forced migration issues in
northern Uganda and Burma. "This is the most memorable experience I've
had at Iowa State."
