geology Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Nuclear waste disposal. Isotopes produced by cosmic rays hitting rock. Name a science and there's not only a good chance that Thure Cerling is interested in it, but has also conducted some sort of research in that area. That diversity and excellence of his work has been the hallmark of Thure's academic and professional careers. He has conducted fieldwork on all seven continents with studies ranging from the diets of modern and ancient mammals, to early man sites in east Africa, to groundwater contamination. His excellence in these fields made it a natural that he was selected for the National Academy of Sciences. "I've continued to learn things in one area that can be applied to other things. Everything you learn has a potential to be useful in other areas." |
