John Hayes

john hayes

chemistry
1962

"It's scientific heaven."

For 26 years, John Hayes taught geo-chemistry at Indiana University. But John knew he was "much more of a scientist than a teacher" and when the Woods Hole Oceangraphic institution came calling, John said yes without hesitation. "I came here because it's a pure research center. I have total freedom."

That total freedom allows John, a senior scientist in geology and geophysics, to make important contributions to understanding the Earth's carbon cycle by demonstrating the importance of methane cycling in ancient ecosystems and by introducing and developing compound-specific isotopic studies. John's studies came on Woods Hole's research vessel "Atlantis" and the submersible "Alvin." "In research in my field you can't find a better community of students and colleagues than here at Woods Hole."
