Darleane Hoffman

darleane hoffman

chemistry
1948 & 1951

Veteran of the national labs.

Ames. Oak Ridge. Los Alamos. Berkeley. Lawrence Livermore. There's hardly a national lab where Darleane Hoffman hasn't worked. And she's been highly successful. An internationally recognized expert in the study of transuranic elements - chemical elements heavier than uranium that typically decay to lighter elements almost immediately - she was a member of the team that discovered elements 118 and 116. "The discovery of these elements was one of the most exciting of my career."

Another highlight of her career was working with Nobel laureate Glenn Seaborg. One of her positions at a national laboratory was the directorship of the Seaborg Institute for Transactinium Science at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. "We created a place where professors and students could come and work with platinum that couldn't do on their campuses."
