chemistry
1981

Superstar chemist.

Chances are you've never heard of atorvastatin. But call it by it's brand name, Lipitor, and there is a good chance you've not only heard of it but know of someone who has used the cholesterol-lowering drug. That's because Lipitor has become the top-selling drug in history, used by more than 45 million people.

And what you might also not know is that the inventor of that drug is Bruce Roth, an Iowa State chemistry graduate.

"It's humbling. You get into this area because you want to contribute. You want to help people. Lipitor is the biggest drug in the history of the industry, but I guess I'd like to think more in terms of people who benefit from it. It's just remarkable."
