Starting from scratch.

No students. No campus. No faculty. And just seven employees. That's what Carol Tomlinson-Keasey faced when she helped create the University of California-Merced from virtually nothing into the tenth school in the California system. "This was a chance to start something new. If you really wanted to have an impact on this area and higher education in California, this is a great place to be."

As the founding chancellor of UC-Merced, Carol was responsible from everything from selecting a campus site and designing the campus, hiring faculty and staff, creating academic offerings and recruiting students. This past fall, in just its second year of existence, the school has 1400 undergraduate and graduate students. "I would wake up every morning and worked on starting a campus that will make such a difference in people's lives. What a good thing to spend your life doing even if it was hard sometimes."
