"It's gotten to the point where I was doing at least one interview a week."

Year after year, William Tong labored on developing laser light technology which could aid the biomedical field. And while he has achieved success and noterity for his research, you could say that the San Diego State University chemistry professor has been in relative obsurcity compared to the attention he has received when that same technology is applied to a military use.

Front page of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Interviews with each of San Diego's six local television stations. Countless interviews on local radio stations. While some of the attention can be explained because San Diego is a military town, it may also be that William is well on his way to modifying his technology to help ground soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan fight IED (improvised explore devices).

"We want to adapt this existing technology and contribute in some small way to maybe prevent these attacks. We hope to develop an instrument that can detect the devices from 100 yards out."
