FOUR-YEAR GRADUATION PLANS

All of the majors* offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences can be completed in four years if a student is academically well prepared and if the student works closely with an academic adviser to make appropriate course choices each semester. Departmental recommendations for an eight-semester program of study for each major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences follow.

Graduation Requirements for Liberal Arts and Sciences Students

  • Earn a minimum of 124.5 credits.

  • Earn a minimum of 45 credits at the 300/400 level taken at a four-year institution. Three credits must be earned in a group outside the group of the major.

  • Complete one year of a single foreign language at the college level, three years of a single foreign language at the high school level, or pass an eight-credit examination that verifies an equivalent level of competency.

  • Fulfill the general education requirements in each of the following groups:
  • Earn a 2.00 “C” grade-point average in courses in the major.

    Minors

Students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences may earn a minor either in another area of the college or in another undergraduate college. Requirements for minors in all colleges are listed in the Iowa State University Bulletin. Depending on the choice of minor and when a student begins to work toward it, a minor may extend the graduation time table.

    Teacher Certification

Students who wish to teach at the secondary level (grades 7 - 12) are enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. They major in the subject matter that they wish to teach and concurrently take the courses required for teacher certification in the state of Iowa. Adding a secondary teaching endorsement may require more than 124.5 credits to graduate and, thus, more than eight semesters to complete.

    * The Bachelor of Liberal Studies program is not open to freshmen and, therefore, is not eligible for the Four-Year graduation plan.
