Track 1: Launching Your Campaign
This session provides an overview of key elements of a campaign, including establishing yourself as a candidate, developing a campaign plan, and launching the campaign.

Track 2: Laying the Groundwork for Public Life
This session covers the different ways to get involved in politics and how to position yourself for a possible run in the future. Topics covered include learning to raise your public profile, getting appointed to public boards, leveraging community leadership for political leadership, the various types of elected offices to consider, and working on campaigns.

Luncheon Plenary Keynote: Message Development and Media Relations

  • Liz Chadderdon, President, The Chadderdon Group, Washington, DC

This session covers the basics of message development and effectively voicing your message in a variety of communication contexts, including direct mail; speeches; and newspaper, radio and television interviews for both rural and urban audiences. Tips also will be given on how to look poised and professional on camera, interviews on tough topics with reporters, and public speaking techniques.

Track 1: Navigating Iowa's Political Parties as a Potential Candidate

This session highlights the power dynamics of party organizations, building relationships with party operatives and gaining the party's support, and how to respond when the party organization is not supportive. It also includes presentations on Democratic and Republican organizations that support women candidates.

Track 2: Navigating the Routes to Public Office
This session answers the most common questions about how to get involved in political life. It provides a “nuts and bolts” overview of the government and party structure in the state. Topics also include how to position yourself for appointment to a public board or commission (including how to submit your resume, who to contact to follow up, and tips for improving your chances) and getting active in the political parties (including an introduction to Iowa party politics, joining the local party, and building relationships with party operatives.)

Afternoon Plenary Keynote: Fundraising for Success

  • Diane Crookham-Johnson, former Finance Chair, Republican Party of Iowa

Fundraising is one of the most crucial aspects of a campaign. This interactive session covers the key components of campaign fundraising, with special emphasis on understanding why people give and making the in-person “ask.” The session also addresses developing a fundraising strategy for your campaign, including assessing fundraising goals; building a donor list; recruiting and motivating a Finance Committee; and utilizing direct mail, events, and political action committees.
