Axel gift funds leadership development programs

Iowa State alumni and longtime Catt Center supporters Joni and John Axel of Muscatine, IA, gave an early boost to the Center's 10th anniversary fund-raising drive with a leadership gift of $100,000 to support student leadership development programs.

The gift, to be donated over the course of 10 years, will fund the creation of the Joni and John Axel Leadership Development series offered through the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics. After discussions with faculty, staff and students at Iowa State, the Center has decided to utilize the gift to develop and support a series of three leadership seminars, each offered for three hours of academic credit to students at ISU. Students completing the series of three seminars will earn a Joni and John Axel Leadership Development Series certificate. The seminars also provide credit toward a new leadership minor being developed at ISU through the Catt Center, Public Policy and Administration, Women's Studies and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Cross-Disciplinary Studies Programs.

The Axels' gift was announced September 19, 2002 at the Women and Philanthropy luncheon hosted by the ISU Foundation and the Catt Center. The keynote speaker at the event was Christine Todd Whitman, former New Jersey governor and then-administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, who was visiting ISU as the Catt Center's fall 2002 Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics.

"The reason the idea of the leadership series appealed to me," John Axel said in announcing the gift, "was not only because Joni and I agree on the mission of the Catt Center and the capabilities of women, but also because I wanted to honor my best friend - my wife, Joni."

With their gift, the Axels are providing a perpetual source of support for the Center's leadership development programs. Endowed gifts are invested and only a percentage of the earnings is used annually to fund the specified purpose. Excess earnings on the endowment fund are invested in the endowment principal, so the value of the fund can be expected to grow over time.

"Joni and John's gift will have both an immediate and lasting impact on the Carrie Chapman Catt Center and opportunities for Iowa State students to learn and develop leadership skills," said Dianne Bystrom, director. "Their generosity will enhance the Iowa State experience for students for years to come."

Joni Urenn Axel earned a bachelor's degree in history from Iowa State in 1964 and a law degree from the University of Iowa in 1981. She is an attorney and director of the Muscatine law firm of Stanley, Lande and Hunter P.C. John Axel earned his bachelor's degree in industrial administration from Iowa State in 1964 and an MBA from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. He is chairman and CEO of Iowa Cos. Inc. in Muscatine.

John has served in a number of civic and volunteer roles, including co-chair of the Iowa delegation to the Republican National Convention; co-chair of the Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee; founder and president of the Musser Public Library; board member of the Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Muscatine
Community Schools, and chair of the Eastern Iowa Economic Development Council.

Joni is a past member of the ISU Foundation Board of Directors and past president and member of the ISU Alumni Association. She has served on the executive committee of the Hoover Presidential Library Association.

Both Joni and John are governors of the ISU Foundation, past members of the ISU College of Business Dean's Advisory Council and past recipients of the ISU Alumni Association's Outstanding Young Alumni Recognition.
