Catt Associates

The Catt Associates student organization aims to develop a cohesive group that will help raise civic awareness and encourage women’s leadership. Catt Associates contribute to the interdisciplinary atmosphere of the Center because they come not only from the fields of political science and public administration, but also from other academic disciplines - including business, journalism, sociology, communication, women’s studies, history, and science and technology. Since 1993, the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics has provided leadership development and educational opportunities to this core group of Iowa State University students.

What opportunities are available for Catt Associates?

  • Participate in leadership and career development activities, including the Axel Leadership Development Series;
  • Receive and provide mentoring through the student-initiated mentoring project;
  • Meet state, national and international leaders and scholars; and
  • Organize programs and plan events with the help of Center staff.

Who can participate in the Catt Associates?

  • The Catt Associates welcome undergraduate and graduate women and men in any field who show an interest in politics, public policy and public service.
  • If you are interested in joining or have questions, please contact one of our officers or advisers.

What do Catt Associates do?

  • Meet every two weeks to discuss current political issues, plan events and hear from guest speakers.
  • Send students to the Iowa Capitol to lobby their legislators on important issues such as education.
  • With funding from Citigroup, plan and run a spring financial education clinic titled "From Debt to Dollars: Financial Power for Young Women" that is open to Iowa State and area community college students. The clinic features several women speakers who address topics such as investment, credit, negotiation and financial planning.
  • Create a "Women Impacting ISU" calendar that recognizes the achievements of 12 women around campus (students, faculty and staff).
  • Send three members to the Public Leadership Educational Network (PLEN) Women in Congress seminar in Washington, D.C., over spring break.
  • Attend private dinners and receptions with prominent women speakers.
