Pianist Brian Ganz in June 7 recital at ISU for
Iowa Music Teachers Association State Conference
Brian Ganz
AMES, Iowa – A recital by American pianist Brian Ganz on Monday, June 7, at 7:45 p.m. highlights the Iowa Music Teachers Association State Conference (June 6-8) at Iowa State University.
Ganz will perform in Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall in the Music Hall on the ISU campus. Adult tickets are $15 and are available at the door. Student admission is free.
About 90 music teachers from throughout Iowa will arrive in Ames for the annual three-day Iowa Music Teachers Association State Conference. Founded 125 years ago in 1885, the IMTA has held conferences in various locations throughout the state since 1886, bringing in highly regarded musicians for seminars, master classes and performances, and offering the state’s music teachers the opportunities to get to know one another and exchange ideas.
Widely regarded as one of the leading pianists of his generation, Ganz has performed in major venues throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, in solo recitals and with renowned symphony orchestras. He has garnered prizes in such major competitions as the 1989 Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Piano competition in Paris and the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Piano Competition. In addition to his performance career, Ganz is a highly admired pedagogue, teaching with Leon Fleisher (his own mentor) at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, and at St. Mary’s College in Maryland.
Ganz is also a local favorite, having performed twice before in Ames. He gave a highly successful concert for the Ames Town & Gown Chamber Music Association in 1998, and was chosen as the featured artist for the IMTA State Conference in 1999, the last time it was held here. In each of these settings, he also interacted with young piano students in workshops and master classes.
Currently involved in a monumental project of recording all of the piano works of Frédéric Chopin, Ganz will honor the recent 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth with a concert program that will include the Waltz in E-flat major, Op 18; Mazurka in A minor; Polonaise in A major, Op. 40, No. 1; Scherzo in B-flat minor, Op. 31; and ten of the Etudes from Op. 10 and Op. 25. The program will begin with the Sonata in E major, Op. 109 of Beethoven.
The Brian Ganz concert is made possible in part by a grant from the Alvin Edgar Fund for the Performing Arts of the ISU Foundation.
Two other public concerts also are scheduled during the IMTA conference:
