Women's Studies Major

 
The cross-disciplinary Women's Studies major provides undergraduates with an opportunity to examine women's roles, contributions, and status in social and cultural context and to investiage a variety of disciplines from feminist perspectives.  An undergraduate major in Women's Studies requires 33 credits taken from core and cross-listed courses. 

Women's Studies majors must satisfy the following requirements:

a)  21 credits selected from Women's Studies (W S) core courses:

Required core courses (12 credits):  W S 201 Introduction to Women's Studies, W S 301 International Perspectives on Womens and Gender, W S 401 Feminist Theories, and  W S 402 Feminist Research in Action

Three credits
of either W S 499 Thesis -OR- W S 491 Internship

Thesis option:  Senior classification required.  Allows students to engage in an independent research project on a topic selected in collaboration with a faculty member who serves as their thesis supervisor.   W S 499 Thesis proposal form must be completed by the student and faculty member and submitted to the W S Program office for review prior to approval and registration.  

Internship option:  Junior or senior classification required.  Allows students to gain experience in working with an organization that focuses on women’s related issues. There are a broad range of areas where individuals can seek internships, including: business and industry, healthcare, human services, education, writing, law and politics.  W S 491 Internship request form must be completed and signed by the student and site supervisor and submitted to the W S Program office prior to approval and registration.   

Six credits chosen from the Women's Studies core courses: W S 203, 205, 302, 320, 350, 425, 435, 450 (repeatable).

b) 12 credits selected from WS core or cross-listed courses.

 

c) A second major or a minor in a different program or department.

 

Women's Studies Minor

Undergraduate students may minor in Women's Studies by taking 15 credits of Women's Studies classes, including W S 201, 301 and one 400-level core Women's Studies course.  Six additional credits of core or cross-listed courses are required.

The following Women's Studies courses are applicable to the Human Relations requirement for teachers: 201, 327, 340, 345, 346, 370, 385, 386.
