Women's Studies Major

An undergraduate major in Women's Studies requires 33 credits of core, cross-listed, and independent study courses. Women's Studies majors must satisfy the following requirements:

18 credits selected from Women's Studies core courses (WS).

  • Required core courses: WS 201, 301, and 401 or 402. Students must also choose between a thesis, WS 499 (3 credits) or an internship, WS 491 (3 credits).

    Students who would like to take WS 499 are requested to fill out the following form Request WS 499.

    Students who would like to take WS 491 are requested to fill out Request WS 491. Please fill in the required information and return form to 313 Catt Hall. Here are some ideas for possible internships opportunities for Iowa and nationally.

  • The remaining 6 credits should be chosen from the Women's Studies core courses (WS 450 and 301 may be taken more than once.)
  • No more than 6 credits of WS 490 may be counted toward the WS major.

    Students who would like to take WS 490, Independent Study, or WS 590, Special Topics, are requested to fill out Request WS 490/590. Please fill in the required information and return form to 349 Catt Hall.

15 credits selected from WS cross-listed courses or WS core courses.

  • Women's Studies majors must also declare a minor or second major in a different program or department.
  • English proficiency requirement: The Women's Studies major requires an average grade of C- or better in English 104 and 105 (or 105H) and WS 301.

Women's Studies Minor
Undergraduate students may minor in Women's Studies by taking 15 semester hours of Women's Studies classes, including Women's Studies 201, 301 and one 400 level core Women's Studies course, plus 6 additional credits of core or cross-listed courses.

The following Women's Studies courses are applicable to the human relations requirement for teachers: 201, 327, 340, 345, 346, 370, 385, 386.
