General Education Requirements
2005-2007 Catalog

GUIDELINES AND LIST OF APPROVED COURSES

Students must earn the minimum credits listed in each of the four general education groups in courses outside the department of the first major:

Experimental Courses (listed in the Schedule of Classes with an X following the course number) are eligible for use in the general education groups once approved at the college and university levels. These courses are added on a continuing basis and may be viewed at www.iastate.edu/~catalog/exp/

Seminar Courses may be acceptable. Advisers should consult with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs in 202 Catt Hall.

Cross-listed Courses. If a course acceptable for satisfying a general education requirement is cross-listed, then a student may take it under either course designator (check under both designators for acceptability). If such a course, under either cross-listing, is used to satisfy a requirement in the department of the student’s first major, it may not be used in the general education groups.

Cross-listed courses may be used to satisfy requirements in any group for which they have been approved, but a student may not apply the same course to more than one group.

Honors Sections of courses acceptable in a group, e.g. Math 165H, are also acceptable in that group.

Courses at the 300 and 400 level may not be listed here if they have prerequisites equal to or higher than the group credit minimum. Such higher level courses may be used to satisfy part of the group requirement, but advisers should consult with the Associated Dean for Academic Programs in 202 Catt Hall about the acceptability of an unlisted course.

The following CANNOT be applied to the general education group requirements:

Orientation courses, independent study courses (usually numbered 290 or 490), cooperative courses, or courses numbered 500 and above.

    Courses taken on a satisfactory-fail (S-F) or pass-no pass (P-NP) basis.

    Clep GENERAL Exam Credits

U.S. Diversity (USD) and International Perspectives (IP). Courses taken to meet university requirements in USD and IP may also apply to the general education groups, if appropriate. A list of USD and IP courses may be viewed at www.iastate.edu/~registrar/courses/div-ip-guide.html
