College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences
Supporting Teaching and Learning
| The college is committed to supporting teaching and learning. In 1999,
it changed its Promotion and Tenure document to recognize the value of
teaching. The same year, it began recognizing master teachers in the college.
Each year 4-7 teachers are selected; teachers present seminars and receive
$1000 in addition to their plaque. Past categories for master teachers
include technology in the classroom, undergraduate research, off-campus
instruction, and multi-cultural instruction. The college also provides
college teaching awards for all the categories of university teaching
awards. In addition, the college gives an annual Graduate Teaching Award,
Undergraduate Teaching Award, and Master Teacher in Social Sciences and
Humanities Award. Departments in the college also provide teaching awards
to their faculty and students.
The college also provides money to departments and faculty for the development
of new courses and teaching methods. For instance, the past academic year
$47,500 was used to support interdisciplinary team teaching, including
teams between Geology and Atmospheric Science and BBMB [Biochemistry,
Biophysics, and Molecular Biology]; Computer Science and GDCB [Genetics,
Development, and Cell Biology]; and Statistics and English. The College
also supports the Center for On-Line Learning.
