NursingClinical nursing, teaching, research, and private practice are among the opportunities open to the professional nurse. Nurses work in many settings, including hospitals, clinics, public health centers, schools, and industry. Although becoming a registered nurse (R.N.) does not require a bachelor's degree, the student who completes the bachelor of science degree in nursing (B.S.N.) has college-level preparation for clinical nursing and the foundation for graduate study. Master's and doctoral degree programs provide further preparation for teaching, administration, and specialized clinical practice. The University of Iowa now offers a Professional Master’s in Nursing for students who have earned a bachelor’s degree in any field (excluding a BSN). Iowa State University does not offer a nursing degree but students may complete prenursing courses at ISU. Requirements for nursing schools vary, so early planning for transfer is essential. Lists of the accredited nursing schools and other information are available at www.allnursingschools.com . Directories of accredited nursing programs in Iowa are available at the Iowa State Board of Nursing Web site at www.state.ia.us/nursing/nursing_education.html. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing Web site can be viewed at www.ncsbn.org/public/regulation/boards_of_nursing_board.htm. Courses required for the University of Iowa B.S.N. Program
ISU also has an articulation agreement with Grand View College which outlines 2 years of coursework that can be completed at ISU before transferring to Grand View. This information is available from the Pre-Health Advisor in 102 Catt Hall. Professional schools may change their prerequisites. Students are responsible for maintaining direct contact with specific professional schools for current prerequisite guidelines. |
