Pre-Law Learning Community

Syllabus

The Pre-Law learning community provides an opportunity for students interested in attending law school, the environment in which they could develop their intellectual and personal preparation for law school.

Because law schools do not require a specific curriculum or give preference to a specific major, these students may not find this assistance within their major(department) area. The Pre-Law Learning Community will connect them with faculty members, academic advisers, and other key professionals on campus who will provide an invaluable network.

The information provided by the learning community will be very useful in the student's career development. The learning community will also link these students to other undergraduate students who share their career aspirations but are in different majors.

COMPONENTS OF THE PRE-LAW LEARNING COMMUNITY:

  • LAS 290C- Preparation for Law School
  • Philosophy 230- Moral Theory and Practice
  • Service/Experiential Learning

TYPES OF INFORMATION/SLILLS PROVIDED:

  • Current information policies and procedures pertaining to LSAT preparation.
  • Current information pertaining to law school admission.
  • Law School related career opportunities in and outside of the courtroom.
  • Opportunity to develop argumentative analysis skills and critical reasoning skills.

ELIGIBILITY:

Junior, senior, and sophomore students with consent, representing all undergraduate degree programs on campus, who plan on attending law school. The Pre-Law Learning Community will consist of 15 students.

SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE:

The Pre-law Advisory Council will provide the approval and ongoing programming for this learning community. Each committee member has a law degree and will also serve as a resource for students.

  • Philosophy 230- Moral Theory and Practice
  • LAS 290C-Preparation for Law School
  • LAS 290C-"PREPRARATION FOR LAW SCHOOL" SEMINAR CLASS WILL COVER THE FOLLOWING TOPIC
    • Choosing to practice law.
    • Preparation for law school.
    • Planning your career.
    • The realities of being a lawyer/law student
    • Diversity issues in law school/global community.
    • Experiential learning opportunities.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Students will become more aware of career opportunities within the field of law.
  • Students will gain specific knowledge of law school admission requirements.
  • Students will receive most current information on how to prepare for the LSAT.
  • Students will develop critical thinking skills, and argumentative analysis skills.
  • Students will look into the "reality" of being a lawyer.

ASSESSMENT:

  • Conduct student satisfaction and assessment LAS 290C survey.
  • Require "feedback" paper.
  • Have students keep journal.

SERVICE LEARNING/EXPERIENTIAL OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Students will "job shadow" an attorney during the semester.
  • Students will choose a service learning project from a list of local social service agencies.
  • Students will pair with attorney mentors.
