Music from Virtual Reality

4:10-5 p.m., Thursday
Spring 2008 Semester
LAS 103X, Section 5
Reference #8794025

Professor Hopkins is a composer of electronic music and researcher in virtual reality applications. Currently he is developing an adaptive multimodal instrument for control of sound synthesis from 3-D virtual environments.

Virtual reality scenes that include objects both visible and touchable are used to generate and control sound. The user interacts with the scene, using qualities of object shape, color, and surface texture to affect sound qualities such as sound color, rhythm, and musical cues.

An interdisciplinary team drawn from human computer interaction, mechanical engineering, and music is working on a tool that will supply sonic feedback in virtual engineering and an instrument for electronic music. Professor Hopkins will share this research with students in this seminar.
