    John V. Atanasoff Discovery Award

Established in 2005, the award is given to an alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who has furthered scientific knowledge of the nation and the world, either through laboratory accomplishments and/or management.

The award recognizes the achievements of John V. Atanasoff, the inventor along with graduate student Clifford Berry, of the world's first electronic digital computer, built during 1937-42. At the time of the discovery, Dr. Atanasoff was a faculty member in Iowa State's Department of Physics. The computer incorporated several major innovations in computing including the use of binary arithmetic, regenerative memory, parallel processing, and separation of memory and computing functions.

Nominations should be submitted to Dave Gieseke, 213 Catt Hall, Iowa State University, by March 1, 2007. For more information call 515-294-7742 or e-mail dgieseke@iastate.edu.
