| Department of English Richard Caplan Psychology BS 1949 Iowa City, Iowa Richard Caplan is a professor emeritus from the Program in Biomedical Ethics and Medical Humanities at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Throughout his career, Caplan has encouraged medical students to study literature and creative writing in several educational programs he created including the CME Reading Retreats in Literature and Medicine and the Creative Writing Contest for Medical Students. He is also a frequent performer as a pianist, chamber musician, accompanist and soloist. Among the many awards Caplan has received are the Educator of the Year from the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians (1979), the Ben Whitaker Award of the Iowa Medical Society (1983), the University of Iowa Hancher-Finkome Medallion (1992) and the establishment of the Richard Caplan Endowed Chair in Biomedical Ethics and Medical Humanities at the University of Iowa.
