Trudy Peterson Presentation - On Being an Archivist
Definition: An archivist comes into an organization or business and determines the documents to preserve, the amount of time to preserve and those documents that should be discarded.
Trudy joined the National Archives in 1968, rising in 1987 to Assistant Archivist and then as both Acting Archivist and POW commissioner of the U.S. - Russia Joint Commission on MIAs/POWs. Since her retirement from the National Archives in 1995, Trudy has worked with international archives particularly relating to archives and human rights; she was appointed founding executive director of the Open Society Archives in Budapest, advised the Truth and Reconciliation commission in South Africa and then wrote an archival guide for truth commissions, and the International Criminal Commission, among others. There are legal issues, political issues and archival issues involved.
The presentation featured Guatemala and the work in managing records documenting government atrocities after the discovery of documents in 2 buildings. Police asserted the documents had been destroyed. Trudy's work was management of records and determining the archiving of the documents for the Human Rights Ombudsman. The materials were in buildings with bats, water damage, dirt and humidity. The documents were more statistical, did not name names, but covered dates and numbers. The documentation covered the deaths of 150,000 in Guatemala's 36-year civil war. A short film clip was created about the process. The archives are typically used for holding evidence and creating records to assist in determining trials, truth telling initiatives and reparations strategies. Guatemala will not process/proceed with a tribunal. Violence is still very high and the country does not abide by international warrants. Resources were forthcoming from national aid societies and Japanese technologies (use of scanners, shelving, etc.).
Whiteford: Thank you for presentation from Dean Whiteford and Council. In addition, announced that Trudy Peterson and Carl Vondra are to be recipients at the awards ceremony on Friday. Congratulations to both.
State of the College - Dean Whiteford
- LAS instructional role
- 1/3 undergraduates and ¼ of graduate students are LAS students
- LAS teaches 60% of student credit hours
- ¾ of freshman and sophomores are enrolled in LAS courses
- Buildings for LAS
- Chemistry building going ahead
- Hach gift of 10,000,000 for chemistry building; thanks to development team
- Snedecor remodel to begin in May, stat is now in several buildings across campus throughout the remodel
- Statistics ranked # 1 department at ISU in US News and World report
- Curricular review - RMM
- Determine changes without negative impact to departments
- Faculty control curriculum
- Greenlee has submitted a PhD program, letters of support from regent sister areas are still needed at this stage
- FY 09, hopefully, will have in place a new department of Applied Linguistics
- Dawn Bratsch-Prince - addition to the associate deans for LAS - no longer interim
- Will focus on Distance Education courses, study abroad and international studies for the college
- Faculty Hiring and Retention
- LAS retained two distinguished professors in Physics and retained a distinguished professor in psychology with a one million dollar refurbishing of the ground floor of the Link building for lab space for psychology
- Last year made 13 hires for 10 departments
- This year made 30 hires in 20 departments
- For each of these 30 hires there were at least 5 finalists of 150 minimum applicants per position to interview with departments, dean and/or associate deans
- Deans/associate deans saw 150 finalist candidates (minimum)
- Science hire start up packages are very large; costs a lot to equip labs and supply space needs
- Departments are assured a return of the department line in the case of a negative tenure decision or in cases where the search was closed with pool not as strong as desired for hire
- Spousal accommodations:
- More hires come with a spousal accommodation request
- Issue - how to do and who pays
- Most spousal accommodation requests are due to both in academics vs the partner being in private industry in Ames or Des Moines
- Most come in on non-tenure line; now more possible to morph to tenure line or permanent position encouraged by provost office
- Provost pay 1/3, dept 1/3, college 1/3
- In reality college pays 2/3 as departments do not have funds to support
- LAS # 1 at ISU in indirect costs distribution
- Very strong LAS research programs; IDC was up
- FY 03 IDC distribution -- $256,000
- FY 07 IDC distribution -- $ 453,000
- University IDC was down
- Possibly due to shift in awarding grants to large multiple PI/collaborations with multiple universities
- May affect LAS in future for same reasons
- Challenges
- Same as this year, money, space and money
- Need to keep entry salaries competitive
- Have a salary compression issue
- Central admin goal is to move closer to “mean salary”
- Need more spousal accommodation dollars
- Space needs will become more pressing; need more lab spaces available as make new hires
- Priorities -
- July 1 RMM implementation
- Will have RMM budget at fall meeting
- Anticipate that rmm in place should assist LAS with more money following student credit hours (sch)
- LAS recruitment - 2 new hires to assist in recruiting more students to LAS and within open option
- Fundraising - student and faculty
- First year experience; match students and top faculty
Foundation Report - Alsatia Mellecker
- Doug Van Houweling and Alsatia Mellecker reported on LAS progress toward the college's $65,000,000 campaign goal. At the date of the meeting the college had raised $42,000,000--65% to goal.
- A power point also demonstrated how much money the college would need to raise to fulfill it's goal of $65,000,000 by December 2010. (slide)
- Dennis Banasiak reported on the recent Hach gift of $10,000,000 to the Chemistry Building campaign; and even though this completes the formal goal of $15,600,000, the college will continue to solicit funds for the project and the department in general.
- Alsatia Reported that FY 08 fund-raising productivity stands at $18,815,000, which is 188% to goal. It is likely the final figure will exceed $20,000,000, the best year ever for LAS.
- Alsatia presented the Business Plan for FY 09 (slide)
