In a career that spanned 40 years with Chevron (now ChevronTexaco), Richard Matzke held any number of positions in exploration, economics, research and corporate planning. Among the positions he held with the petroleum firm included vice president and general manager of Chevron Chemical’s Fertilizer Division, general manager of the Foreign Staff, a director of Caltex Pacific Indonesia and Amoseas, and president of Chevron Canada Resources. While president of Chevron Overseas Petroleum, Matzke was responsible for directing Chevron's oil exploration and production activities outside of North America.

When Matzke left Chevron in 2002, retiring as the company's vice chairman of the board of directors, he continued his international activities. He has been active on a number of leadership positions including the board of the American-Iranian Council, the National Committee on United States-China Relations, the Russian-American Chamber of Commerce, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. In 2004 he was a Council on Foreign Relations task force member that produced a report "Iran: Time for a New Approach." That task force was headed by Zbigniew Brzezinski, former national security adviser, and Robert Gates, former CIA director and current U.S. Secretary of Defense.

The current president of NESW Solutions, Matzke was honored in October 2005 by the Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences with its "Outstanding Alumni Award."
