| Iowa State University Memorial Union Harold Pride Service Medallion Established in 1953 for devoted service to Iowa State University through the Memorial Union Andrew C. Tofilon 2002 BA Journalism & Mass Communication DMJ 2002 Political Science Rochester, Minnesota Andy Tofilon was elected ISU Government of the Student Body president in 2001-02, and in this role he was also a member of the Memorial Union Board of Directors. That year, planning for the Union’s renovation was underway. Andy became very interested and recognized the importance of an up-to-date Union facility. Andy and his GSB Finance Chair, Alex Olson, talked to ISU administrators about how the renovation could be financed. When it became clear that students had the most to gain and that it was students who should finance the project through their fees, the two devised a serious campaign to convince student representatives about the importance of this issue. Their carefully thought-out and masterfully presented case was persuasive, and, coupled with their passionate beliefs, won over the GSB Senate and other key student groups. When it came down to the vote, there were no "nays." This campaign was reminiscent of other students connected to MU history, especially the students who kicked off the original fundraising among their peers in 1920. |
