    John V. Atanasoff Reearch and Discovery Award

    Awarded to alumni, faculty and friends for their outstanding service or academic contributions that further the educational mission of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Nominees may include, but are not restricted to, alumni and friends who have contributed time, effort and financial help to LAS and faculty members who have been outstanding teachers on the graduate and/or undergraduate level.

    An internationally recognized leader in understanding the geology of the mid-continent region, Lynn Watney is the executive director of the Kansas University Energy Research Center and a senior scientist at the Kansas Geological Survey. His research in the areas of sedimentary modeling, petrophysical software development, petroleum reservoir and analog characterization, reservoir management, and Internet Web applications building online projects for geo-engineering modeling has resulted in increased exploration and production of oil and gas in Paleozoic rocks in Kansas.

    At the KU Energy Research Center, Watney facilitates interdisciplinary research and development efforts in energy resource extraction, production, and end use technologies. He has developed energy resource models to aid in application and development of energy technologies. His work with the Energy Research Center has also led to several pending patents in renewable energy and international collaboration in biorenewable resources in energy production using fuel cells.
    Watney, who is a 2001 recipient of Iowa State University’s Distinguished Achievement Award, serves as a member of 24 professional boards, management councils, committees, task forces, and panels.
