A Career Planning Course for Parents

When should my student go to Career Services?

We encourage students to start using Career Services right away as a freshman. There are valuable resources in selecting a major and career exploration that can help your student in their career decisions. Also, we encourage freshman to attend the career fairs and workshops to meet different employers and find out more about their career field. Review a sample four year plan.

My student doesn't know what to major in, how can you help?

It is common for students to have a difficult time choosing a major and can often cause a student to feel stressed and overwhelmed. LAS Career Services can help open-option students by giving them materials about careers. Encourage your student to make an appointment to help them with the process of choosing a major. We also have online tools that might help your student as well.

What can my student do to ensure they get a job after college?

There are several things that your student can do to help them secure a job even before graduation. The first tip would be to use our Career Management Service (ISU CMS) to search for internships and jobs. This database offers thousands of internships and job postings and has over 11,000 registered employer accounts. Also, you can encourage your student to get their resumes reviewed, attend career fairs and also try out our mock interview program that allows them to practice interviewing before they go for their first professional interview with an employer.

What can my student do with a degree in liberal arts?

The truth is that your student can do whatever they want to do! There are lots of employers that are looking for college graduates with a wide variety of majors. For example, on average, 75% of employers at our career fairs look to hire LAS majors. Your student's education is about studying what they are interested in, so encourage them to select classes they are excited to take and to explore career fields that are meaningful to them.

What kind of salary can my student expect from their entry level position?

There is a range of starting salaries for college graduates. Their salary will depend on their experience, job market and also their location. America's Career InfoNet can provide national and state data by occupation.

*Occupied includes employment, education and military service.
