Biological
and PreMedical Illustration
C.A. Croyle, Chair
Biological & Pre-Medical Illustration is a small, but active interdisciplinary
pre-professional program housed in both the College of Liberal Arts &
Sciences and the College of Design. Over twenty years old, the program
graduates students who pursue careers primarily in medical and scientific
illustration.
Students of this program are vigorously encouraged to complete their education
in graduate programs in institutions such as Johns Hopkins, The Medical
College of Georgia, and The University of Illinois at Chicago. BPMI enjoys
a growing national reputation as a program to begin a career in these
fields. Currently, dozens of graduates are employed as scientific communicators
in research hospitals, museums, publishing firms, museum display studios,
scientific animation studios and agencies as well as other institutions
that deal with the complexities of communicating science and research.
The program is composed of three primary parts: a liberal arts education,
a natural science core, and a studio art core. Students are admitted into
the program after a one or two year period of pre-majoring.
Application to the program is made with a transcript, portfolio, and essay.
Applications are accepted once each semester. The program is guided and
organized by an advisory committee and director, who represent both colleges
and subject areas that contribute to the curriculum of the program.
