Technology
and Social Change Eric Abbott, Coordinator
The Technology and Social Change Program is a cross-disciplinary program
examining the relationships between technologies and the social and cultural
environments in which they operate. The program has a national and international
perspective, with courses addressing the interrelationships, policies and
impacts created by the international exchange of technologies. Through Technology
and Social Change, students will better understand the institutional and
sociocultural consequences of technological change from differing perspectives
and will become sensitive to the issues attending the use of technology
to improve people's lives.
TSC offers minors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. With the
exception of the core undergraduate course, TSC 341 (Technology: International,
Social, and Human Issues), TSC courses are dual-listed with other courses
in relevant departments including agronomy, sociology, journalism and mass
communication, and philosophy. The core course is a university-wide course
supported by LAS that attracts students from four colleges. The graduate
core course is TSC 541 (Technological Innovation, Social Change, and Development),
which is taught within Sociology. Faculty in the Technology and Social Change
Program come from a variety of disciplines. Many of them have significant
overseas research and teaching backgrounds that enable them to relate technologies
to an increasingly global society. |
