Opportunities are limitless if you decide to pursue a meteorology major at Iowa State University.

Our graduates work in a variety of professions including television meteorology, governmental weather forecasting, the military and as professors and researchers in higher education.

As a meteorology major, you will develop a broad understanding of the fundamental physical and dynamic processes governing the motions and behavior of the atmosphere as a fluid system. You will take basic courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics as you build a foundation on which your meteorology major is built.

You will also be encouraged to develop a strong area of emphasis to go with your meteorology degree. These range from speech if you are interested in a broadcast career, to computer science or mathematics if you want to attend graduate school, to chemical engineering if you want to go into private consulting.

If a broadcast meteorology career is what you seek, then you should take advantage of "Cy's Eyes on the Skies," the longest running program on ISU TV. Student meteorologists prepare their own forecasts and become on-air personalities on the twice-a-week show.

And while we don't have a formal class that chases tornadoes, experienced storm chasers from the student chapter of the American Meteorological Society will lead groups out on occasion.

Student Organizations

Iowa State's student chapter of the American Meteorological Society has been one of the best student chapters in the nation. In fact in 2006, the group was named the top group in the country.

The AMS chapter was selected because of the large number of activities they plan on a yearly basis. The group coordinates a local weather forecasting contest among its members, travels to weather-related locales throughout the country, produces "Cy's Eyes on the Skies" local weather show and regularly brings Des Moines and Cedar Rapids meteorologists to campus.

LAS majors require a minimum of 120 credits, including a minimum of 45 credits at the 300 or above level. You must also complete the Communication Proficiency and LAS World Language Requirements. Six semesters of one foreign language taken in high school satisfies the World Language requirement.

Students in all ISU majors must complete a 3 credit course in U.S. Diversity and a 3 credit course in International Perspectives.  Discuss with your adviser how the two courses you select can be applied to address general education requirements.   Check for a list of approved courses at:
Check the registrar's website.

1 Students taking CHEM 177 should plan to take CHEM 178 as well.
2 Student must select at least 9 credits from a list of optional courses.
3 Students should select a humanities or social science course based on need.  If these LAS requirements have been satisfied, students may select a meteorology elective or alternate course.  Students should discuss possible alternate course options with their adviser.
