International StudiesThe world is a small place and getting smaller every day. An international studies major at Iowa State University will provide you opportunities to develop skills in and an understanding of global events and issues of relevance to all people. The major is designed for students like you who wish to prepare for work or advanced study in a broad range of fields in the international arena, including foreign service, journalism, advocacy organizations, education, scientific or research institutions, non-governmental organizations, humanitarian agencies, environmental organizations and global businesses. The international studies major is a secondary major that is pursued only in combination with your primary academic major. You select a topical module and a geographic regional studies component in which you wish to concentrate. With courses in these areas you can integrate your understanding of a selected global issue with knowledge of the major culture, values and problems of a selected geographical area. ScholarshipsCareer Opportunities in International StudiesInternational studies graduates combine the expertise of their primary major with global training and proficiency in a second language. While the career opportunities are limitless, many of our graduates seek jobs in management, human resources, political organizations, teaching English as a second language, public relations, translation and interpretations, medicine, journalism, engineering, law, and business. Recent international studies graduates have chosen to pursue graduate school or have moved directly into professional positions with the Peace Corps, Principal Financial, U.S. Marines, Americorps, Mercy Medical Center, Auralog International, U.S. Department of State, and Wells Fargo, among other organizations. |
