Political Science

Is there a better place to study political science than in Iowa and at Iowa State University? We don't think so. Every four years, the state, the community and our campus are overrun with opportunities for politically minded students to get involve with the campaign of your choice.

Our graduates in the field will say to a person they got their start during the Iowa Caucuses. Here's an opportunity not only meet presidential candidates face-to-face, but put into practice what you've learned in the classroom out in the field.

But the campaign trail isn't the only thing you will learn as a political science major. You will maximize your opportunities by completing a broad liberal arts program. You will understand the interrelationships of the subfields of political science, develop skills in analysis and critical thinking, and be able to apply research methods relevant to the discipline.

With internationally recognized faculty and a curriculum covering the various aspects of domestic and international politics, you will receive a quality education and will be prepared for a wide array of careers in the public and private sectors.

Career Opportunities

Recent political science graduates have gone onto graduate school or moved directly into professional positions including

  • Americorps
  • Congressman Tom Latham
  • Democratic Party
  • Mutual of Omaha
  • State of Iowa
  • Texas House of Representatives
  • Peace Corps
  • White House

Internships

There's no better way to see if you are interested in your chosen field than participating in an internship. The Department of Political Science believes that students who participant in an internship enrich their college educational experience.

Our students regularly intern in Washington, D.C., at the Iowa Legislature and state agencies, city and county governments and non-profit organizations.

Postcard: Dear Mom & Dad, I'm so happy I decided to study abroad this semester in Greece. You can't believe what a great opportunity it has been to experience a different culture. Plus the courses I've taken in advertising and communication fit nicely into my four-year plan at Iowa State. This has been such a different experience than my internship with last summer in L.A. Wish you were here, Your daughter
