From the Director

PLANNING PROCESS - I hope you all had a good break and are back refreshed and excited about the spring semester International Programs!

We are starting the planning process for the annual end of year meeting and would be interested in your input on what activities we might include this year. We are also very excited about a new initiative for Arabic language teaching and new classes on Islam and the countries of the Middle East/Southwest Asia. If you have suggestions on potential classes on this region and/or faculty or qualified graduate students who would be interested in an interdisciplinary seminar on this region please contact me or Jeff Schroeder (jeffs@iastate.edu) who is coordinating this as liaison with DMACC our partner in this initiative.

In our continued effort to identify potentially useful internships and job opportunities I am enclosing information on Americans for Informed Democracy.
Have a great semester and thanks for your enthusiasm and support for International programs in our college.

Steffen Schmidt

INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE WITH GLOBAL NON-PROFIT
Americans for Informed Democracy (AID), a non-profit organization that raises global awareness in the U.S., is now accepting applications for its Spring and Summer 2006 internship program. AID is seeking globally conscious graduate and college students who have a background in international affairs and are interested in a dynamic and fast-paced internship that will give them a hands-on introduction to the fields of global education, non-profit management and youth organizing. The internship program offers students an unparalleled introduction to the diverse professional opportunities within international NGOs. Interns help lead media outreach, grant writing, partnership development, fundraising, civic education, and long-term strategy development. For more on internships with Americans for Informed Democracy, click on www.aidemocracy.org/Initiative.cfm?initiative_id=intern or visit www.aidemocracy.org.

News

EU'S TOP SCIENCE PRIZE – Costas Soukoulis, a senior physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory and Distinguished Professor of physics and astronomy, coordinates the research team that has won the Descartes Prize for Excellence in Scientific Collaborative Research, the European Union's highest honor in the field of science. He and his collaborators received the prestigious award for creating a novel class of artificial metamaterials called left-handed materials, or LHMs, which exhibit fascinating properties that cannot be found in naturally occurring materials.

LHMs exhibit negative refraction, bending light in the opposite direction to that seen in natural materials. They can be fabricated to have zero reflectance for all angles hit by incoming electromagnetic waves. In addition, they can focus light without the need for curved surfaces. These and other amazing properties promise a wide range of potential applications for LHMs.

More information on Soukoulis' award is available at www.external.ameslab.gov/final/News/2005rel/Descartesaward.htm.

FULBRIGHT RECIPIENT - Arun Barua, collaborating professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology, has been selected for a Fulbright Senior Specialists project in India at Gauhati University. Barua will take part in a vitamin A deficiency eradication program while at Gauhati University.

Learn more about Barua's Fulbright at www.las.iastate.edu/newnews/bbmbfulbright.shtml.

Internships

DATABASE - A database of internship opportunities for the RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) program is now online. The program offers undergraduates the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research projects this summer at some of the top research institutions and universities in Germany. Detailed project descriptions and application materials are available online at www.daad.de/RISE.

Study Abroad

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT TRIP - SIT Study Abroad is offering a faculty development trip to Asia this year. The Access Asia Trip in the summer 2006 will go to southwest China.

The program, "China: Public Health and Traditional Chinese Medicine," is designed to enable individual faculty to incorporate some aspect of "Chinese medicine into their work, with the larger goal of promoting Chinese studies in the U.S. undergraduate curriculum and increasing student awareness of this non-traditional study abroad topic and locale.

Space is limited and interested faculty should send a letter of interest to SIT Study Abroad by Feb. 15, 2006.

Additional information on the SIT Study Abroad program is available at www.sit.edu/studyabroad/asia/china_sum.html.
