Events
CELEBRATING FLORENCE – The Department of Music will host
a symposium on the Italian city of Florence with principal guest clinician
John T. Spike Jan. 29-31 in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital. All events are
free and open to the public.
The Florence Symposium recognizes the contribution of Carl Bleyle, professor
emeritus of music, to the Semester in Florence program. That study abroad
program allows Iowa State students the opportunity to study in one of
the world’s great cities. Bleyle continues to direct that program
as well as a smaller Tones of Florence summer study abroad experience.
The three-day symposium will feature a lecture by Spike on "The Ambiguities
of Caravaggio" on Thursday, Jan. 29, and two concerts on Friday and
Saturday, Jan 30-31. The Saturday performance, "Italian Music of
the Middle Ages and Renaissance," will include music performed by
Musica Antiqua. On Friday, "Music Inspired by Florence - Its Art
and Literature," will be performed by Iowa State student ensembles
and will include former students of the Semester in Florence and Tones
of Florence programs.

Research
MULTI-MEDIA FULBRIGHT – Cynthia Myers has a greater appreciation
today of the experience her students go through. The adjunct instructor
of English was a Fulbright Scholar during the fall semester. The Fulbright
grant allowed Myers to work hand-in-hand with faculty and staff members
at the University of Concepcion in Chile developing a multi-media English
as a Foreign Language (EFL) curriculum for a beginning Web-based EFL course
on that campus.
"It (her experiences in Chile) really brought home to me in a very
personal way the struggles that my students must have here (communicating),"
said Myers, who has taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at Iowa
State and speaks passing Spanish. "Fortunately the nature of my project
was such that we usually worked in English instead of Spanish. But I did
need to communicate with the technical staff in Spanish."
Myers worked as a consultant to a team of 16 writers and computer programmers
on the project, which was funded partially by the Chilean Ministry of
Education and the University of Concepcion. This semester she will be
helping the web team with evaluating a pilot course of the project.

Summer Opportunities
EUROPEAN SPRING INSTITUTE – The Center for Public Policy
in Prague, Czech Republic, will be holding its European Spring Institute
on the "Future of Europe: Lobbying in Brussels" March 31-21.
The nine-day academic program brings together 30 undergraduate and graduate
students of various nationalities and academic backgrounds from the U.S.
and Europe.
Students are provided with an exciting opportunity to deepen their own
expertise by enhancing the knowledge of the changing European Union (EU)
politics and by exchanging ideas with academics, EU policy practitioners
and fellow students. The spring program combines intensive academic courses
with cultural, social and recreational opportunities.
The deadline is Feb. 13, 2004, and additional information can be obtained
at http://www.esi-prague.org
