Features
POP CULTURE, RUSSIAN STYLE - Olga Mesropova has vivid
childhood memories of the Soviet Union. And the memories of television, movies
and other popular culture mediums in the communist country are predictable -
few choices and heavy governmental censorship.
That has all changed in post-Soviet Russia.
"After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Western television programs and
other pop culture inundated Russia," says the assistant professor in the
Department of World Languages and Cultures.
These days Mesropova researches popular culture in the post-Soviet Union, particularly
Russian film, comedy and popular performance. Learn more about her work on-line
at www.las.iastate.edu/newnews/mesropova0219.shtml.

BACK IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION - Jeffrey Prater, professor
of music, will continue his association with Russia when he travels back to
the country later this month. Prater, who spent the fall of 2005 as a Fulbright
Scholar at the Immanuel Kant Russian State University, has been invited to judge
a week-long international choral festival competition in Saratov, Russia, about
500 miles southeast of Moscow.
"The honor of being chosen as an adjudicator for this important international
competition would be reason enough for me to travel to Russia, but additionally,
the organizing committee of the festival has asked to feature my hour-long original
musical competition on the festival's closing concert," Prater said.

International Fellowship Program
VEF - Since 2003 through its Fellowship Program, VEF has placed nearly
200 Vietnamese nationals for graduate degree programs in science and technology
at leading U.S. universities. Using the highly successful Fellowship program
as a model, the new Visiting Scholar Program offers qualified Vietnamese scientists
with a doctorate a professional development opportunity to expand their knowledge
base and research capacity.
The doctorate must be in a field of science, technology, engineering, or math.
At a leading U.S. academic institution, the Visiting Scholar will undertake
a program of up to one year in length, which may include formal courses, workshops,
seminars, laboratory work, research, or other types of activities. After returning
to Vietnam , the Visiting Scholar must train others in the skills learned in
the U.S. as the VEF Visiting Scholar Program is a training-of-trainers (TOT)
program. Furthermore, the Visiting Scholar serves as a key person to help form
linkages between U.S and Vietnamese institutions for long-term cooperation and
research.
The deadline is April 6 and more information can be found on-line at www.vef.gov.
