LAS International On-Line is the bi-monthly on-line
publication of the International Programs of the College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences. LAS International is part of LAS' on-going efforts to coordinate
all aspects of international activities within the College including international
studies, study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.
Events
ANDREI MARKOVITS - Andrei Markovits, the Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate
Professor of Comparative Politics and German Studies at the University
of Michigan, will present an Institute on World Affairs lecture on Sunday,
March 28, at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union.
The event is sponsored in part by the Western European Area Studies Program
within LAS International Programs.
Markovits will speak on "Outside Looking In: European Anti-Americanism
and Anti-Semitism - Ever Present Though Always Denied." A specialist
on the politics of Western and Central Europe, Markovits has published
a dozen books and edited volumes, well over 100 scholarly articles, 50
review essays, and many articles in interviews in the American and European
press.

WOMEN, FOOD AND ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS - A two-day conference,
"Environment: Personal as Political - Women, Food and Environmental
Ethics" will be held Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, in the Memorial
Union. The event will begin at noon on Friday and be held throughout the
day on Saturday.
Victoria Davion will give the conference's plenary address on Saturday
at 10:30 a.m. on "Women and the Environment: Ecological Feminist
Perspectives.' Davion is a professor of philosophy at the University of
Georgia and editor of the journal, Ethics and the Environment.
Her areas of specialization include environmental ethics and feminist
philosophy.
Additional sessions will feature discussions on a number of issues by
Iowa State faculty members and other area experts. Some of the sessions
include "Women's Work is Never Done: International Perspectives on
Local Food Production and Consumption;" "Heritage Foods and
Seeds in a Changing World," "Talking the Talk: Ecofeminism and
Bioregional Perspectives," "Who Eats Local Food?" roundtable,
"Ask Us How We Grow Your Food," "Food in the City,"
and "Midwestern Cuisine: Home-grown Recipes for Prairie."
Registration is due by Friday, April 2, and should be turned into Karen
Kessel, Department of Anthropology, 324 Curtiss Hall. Additional information

Study Abroad
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS - Fifty Iowa State students with majors in
the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have received LAS Study Abroad
Scholarships for travel either during the spring or summer sessions.
The students received funding for trips to Belize ("Coastal Policy")
and Mexico ("Experience Yucatan") during spring break 2004.
The summer funding is for LAS study abroad programs including "The
Tones of Florence," "Primate Conservation," "Biomes
of Australia," "India," "Archeology of Greece,"
and "In the Footsteps of the Inca (Bolivia)."
