Events
WOMEN AND THE ENVIRONMENT – It was supposed to be this
small, on-campus symposium with the goal of bringing faculty with similar
research interests together.
At least that's what a group headed by Whitney Sanford, associate professor
of philosophy and religious studies, and Karen Kessel, assistant professor
of anthropology and women’s studies, had originally planned. While
the initial goal remains in place, others have been added and now the
small on-campus symposium has developed into a two-day conference.
"Environment: Personal as Political - Women, Food and Environmental
Ethics" will be held Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, in the Memorial
Union. The event will begin at noon on Friday and be held throughout the
day on Saturday.
Victoria Davion will give the conference's plenary address on Saturday
at 10:30 a.m. on "Women and the Environment: Ecological Feminist
Perspectives." Davion is a professor of philosophy at the University
of Georgia and editor of the journal, Ethics and the Environment.
Her areas of specialization include environmental ethics and feminist
philosophy.
Additional sessions will feature discussions on a number of issues by
Iowa State faculty members and other area experts. Some of the sessions
include "Women's Work is Never Done: International Perspectives on
Local Food Production and Consumption;" "Heritage Foods and
Seeds in a Changing World," "Talking the Talk: Ecofeminism and
Bioregional Perspectives," "Who Eats Local Food?" roundtable,
"Ask Us How We Grow Your Food," "Food in the City,"
and "Midwestern Cuisine: Home-grown Recipes for Prairie."
Registration is due by Friday, April 2, and should be turned into Karen
Kessel, Department of Anthropology, 324 Curtiss Hall. Additional information
can be obtained from Kessel at kkessel@iastate.edu
or Whitney Sanford at wsanford@iastate.edu
The event is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences International
Programs, the College of Agriculture, Bioethics and Women's Studies.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS – The College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences International Programs will participate in the International
Business Conference held in the Scheman Building on Friday, April 2.
More than 300 attendees from Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas and Nebraska are
expected to attend the event to discuss global supply chain and entrepreneurship
issues.
LAS will have a booth at the International Fair from 3:30-5 pm on Friday.
The booth, which will highlight LAS’ international activities, will
be staffed by faculty members from the Department of Political Science
and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
Study Abroad
BELIZE MISSION – Several media accounts of the recent College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Study Abroad trip to Belize are available.
