Affirming a Commitment to Global Learning
www.las.iastate.edu/students/international/
LAS International On-Line is the bi-monthly on-line publication
of the International Programs of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. LAS
International is part of LAS' on-going efforts to coordinate all aspects of
international activities within the College including international studies,
study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.
Features
DUAL CULTURES - Working behind the counter at the local fast
food restaurant or sacking groceries at the Hy-Vee are jobs typically high school
students get. Cilia María Ruiz-Paz wasn't a typical high school student
and it was apparent through a number of activities, including the type of jobs
the Fairfield, Iowa, resident was hired for.
"People have always hired me because of my language skills," the Colombia
native says. "Even in high school."
One of the first jobs Ruiz-Paz got was as a Latin American customer service
representative for Chappell Graduation Images/Marathon Foto in Fairfield. There
she dealt with consumer issues from around the world. Later she was employed
by the Jefferson County Court House's Auditor's Office as a courthouse assistant.
Again she used her language skills, she's proficient in English, Spanish and
French, to assist with voter registrations.
At Iowa State she has also used her language skills to obtain internships and
positions at Principal Financial Group and Phasient Learning Technologies of
Ames.
"For my internships at Principal, I researched, interpreted and presented
information on the Latino market to company executives," she said. "I
translated, compiled, and analyzed data from a number of international surveys."

INTERNATIONAL DISCUSSIONS - Conversations in a food science laboratory
made up Karin Brandt's mind. At the time Brandt was a nutritional science major
and in between conducting experiments, her discussions with graduate students
and post-docs from Ghana, China and India cemented her academic goals.
"I was working in the lab with all these test tubes and I realized through
conversations with my co-workers that malnutrition could be better explained
by political reasons than simply scientific issues," she said. "My
passion lies more with the policies that are instituted for food distribution.
I promptly switched majors."
Brandt switched to dual majors in political science and international studies.
And for the past two years she has served as an undergraduate research assistant
for the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods, under the direction of Robert
Mazur, associate professor of sociology.
In her role with that Center, Brandt has learned about partnerships with an
NGO (non-governmental organization) which is assisting rural farmers in Uganda
to improve agricultural livelihoods. She has also researched refugee and forced
migration issues in northern Uganda and Burma.

Events
AT THE MOVIES - A look at comedy in Russian movies will be highlighted
during the annual REEES Film Festival. "Laughter Behind the Iron Curtain:
Festival of Russian Film Comedy" will be presented by the Russian, East
European and Eurasian Studies (REEES) program in the College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences. The film series is co-sponsored by the REEES Student Club and
the University Honors Program.
Each film will be screened at 6:30 p.m. in 0001 Carver Hall and includes the
Wednesday, April 4 showing of the 1993 Yuri Mamin comedy "Window to Paris."
Additional information on the film series is available on-line at www.las.iastate.edu/newnews/reeesfilmseries07.shtml.
The next Latin American Film Festival presentation is April 5 with a screening
of the 1997 Chilean movie "Historias de Futbol" at 7 p.m. in 1227
Hoover Hall.
