LAS International On-Line is the bi-monthly on-line publication of the International Programs of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. LAS International is part of LAS' on-going efforts to coordinate all aspects of international activities within the College including international studies, study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.

HIGH-ENERGY PHYSICS AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL - The European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland, is building the most powerful particle collider on the planet.

And the project has a distinct Iowa State University component to it.

FULBRIGHT - Kathy Leonard, professor of Spanish in the Department of World Languages and Cultures, has received a Fulbright for research in Bolivia for 2006-07 to continue her work on women miners. This is a serial grant, which will allow Leonard to travel to Bolivia several times over the next three years.

ESSAY WINNER - The Latin American Studies Program is pleased to announce that Victoria Muñoz is the recipient of its 2006 Undergraduate Essay Prize. The Latin American Studies Program would like to thank the departments of History, Political Science, World Languages and Cultures, the Study Abroad Office and the Center for American Intercultural Studies for their generous contributions to the prize fund.

ESSAY PRIZE - The Western European Studies Program is hosting its second annual undergraduate essay competition. Iowa State students are invited to submit essays dealing with Western Europe by April 3. The essay topic is open and could involve any aspect of contemporary or historical European culture, literature, politics, economics or philosophy.

Area Program Studies Events

FATAL ATTRACTIONS - The Latin American Studies Program will present a talk by Kristin Pesola, assistant professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures.

Pesola will present "Fatal (Tourist) Attractions: Saura's Antonieta and Mexican National Identity" on Monday, April 10, at 4:10 p.m. in 1213 Hoover Hall. The presentation looks at the production of the 1982 film Antonieta that is based on the life of Mexican post-revolutionary figure Antonieta Rivas Mercado.

REEES EVENTS - The Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies Program has several events scheduled over the next two weeks including:

  • April 5, 302 Catt Hall, noon - "Contemporary Women's Movement in Ukraine," Olga Romantsova, graduate student from Kharkiv National University in Ukraine

  • April 6, 606 Ross Hall, 4:10 p.m. - "Envisioning and Mythologizing the Cosmos: K.E. Tsiolkovskii, Russian Public Culture, and the Roots of Soviet Cosmonautics, 1857-1935," James Andrews, associate professor of modern Russian and comparative European history, Iowa State University, and co-director of the Center and Ph.D. Program in the Historical Studies of Technology and Science.

  • April 13, Sun Room, Memorial Union, 8 p.m. - "Naming God, Naming the Infinite: Religious Mysticism and Mathematics in France and Russia, 1890-1930," Loren R. Graham. The event is part of the History of Technology and Science Series.
