LAS International On-Line is the bi-monthly on-line publication of the International Programs of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. LAS International is part of LAS' on-going efforts to coordinate all aspects of international activities within the College including international studies, study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.

On-campus Activities
SECOND LANGUAGE – Graduate students. Undergrads. Post-docs. Visiting scholars. Even spouses of those individuals.

All have made their way to the offices of the Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP) at Iowa State.

"IEOP has played a vital role in internationalizing Iowa State over these past four decades,"” said Charles Kostelnick, professor and chair of the Department of English. "The program is quickly approaching its 40th anniversary of providing high-quality English language instruction for international students and others on campus, and yet few seem to know their story."

IEOP's story is remarkable. The program is a complete, full-time program in spoken and written American English emphasizing the language skills that non-native English speakers will need for successful study at the college level in the United States.

News
SEEKING DIVERSITY – A faculty/staff committee has completed a study in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on diversity in the College entitled "A Clear, Accountable Commitment to Diversity."

"This is the first step in demonstrating the College's commitment to promoting a community that celebrates human diversity," said Michael Whiteford, LAS dean. "As the largest college at Iowa State University, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has a special obligation to be the institution's leader in engaging students, faculty and staff, and the community on the importance of diversity in all respects. I look at this as natural because this college teaches so many courses whose curricular content naturally address issues of diversity and underrepresented groups."

Michael Bugeja, professor and director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, chaired the committee.

Additional information and the complete diversity report is available on-line at http://www.las.iastate.edu/newnews/diversity.shtml

MULTICULTURAL MASTERS – Three of this year's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Master Teachers spoke at a recent Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) panel.

The three (Hector Avalos, associate professor of philosophy and religious studies and director of the U.S. Latino/a Studies Program; Susan Cross, associate professor of psychology; and Lulu Rodriguez, associate professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, spoke on preparing Iowa State students for life after college and the diversity issues that the students will face after graduation.

This year's LAS Master Teachers class was selected for their success in multicultural instruction in the classroom. Additional information on the panel discussion can be found on-line at http://www.las.iastate.edu/newnews/masterteachersspring04.shtml
