LAS International On-Line is the bi-monthly on-line publication
of the International Programs of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. LAS
International is part of LAS' on-going efforts to coordinate all aspects of
international activities within the College including international studies,
study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.
From the Director
WELCOME BACK to campus for another exciting year of
International Activities!
Soon we will be preparing for the Study Abroad Fair, which features International
activities, internships, scholarships, jobs, and study abroad at ISU. We in
the LAS College want to highlight programs that are of special relevance to
students in the college. Please let me know of any exciting activities you would
like us to highlight at our display. Also, please stop by our table and let
you students know about the event. I will send you the information as soon as
we have the date and time.
We are also interested in any international internships and job or career opportunities
or good sources of information on these. Our fall program assistant Sara Birkenholz
- <sarab_13@hotmail.com> - is
compiling information to be used in advising. Please send any tips you have
to her. Sara was an International Studies and International Business major,
recently graduated, and has taken on a short term assignment with our program
to develop some data bases and to help set up the new International Programs
office in Catt Hall. (More on this when it's up and running).
Dr. Jeff Schroeder has again agreed to join our program to team teach LAS 235,
to work again on the very successful Belize Spring Break trip (last year it
had 20 students) and the Sustainable Development class that goes with the Belize
adventure. Jeff is a former ISU student who went on to do some interesting work
in South Korea, Russia, Taiwan, China and Europe helping set up UPS offices.
He then returned to academia, getting his Ph.D.in Political Science with a focus
on International political Economy and Globalization at the University of Oregon.
Jeff has also developed a multi-disciplinary course on terrorism, which was
hugely successful last year and will be offered again this spring. He also developed
and taught a class on Globalization which we also hope to repeat this coming
year in the summer. Jeff, who has experience and interest in curricular issues,
helped us negotiate an articulation agreement with DMACC. In this agreement,
students at DMACC who take a set of pre-defined and vetted classes, can transfer
these to ISU and be ahead of the curve for a major in International Studies.
We know of at least two students this fall who are coming to Iowa State University
because of this agreement.
I hope your semester will be fruitful and exciting and I'll try to keep you
updated on college level international activities and opportunities through
this newsletter.

LAS International Programs.

TO RUSSIA WITH IOWA STATE - Talk about making the most of a chance
meeting.
Just over 25 years ago, Jeffrey Prater struck up a conversation with a German
woman and her 12-year-old granddaughter in a restaurant in Salzburg, Austria.
Turns out these Germans and Prater had something in common - a love for
music.
Several times over the next 25 years, Prater and the German girl's father
have collaborated on numerous musical activities in Europe. And just last month,
Prater led a Iowa State delegation to Russia where they performed two full-length
concerts as part of a citywide festival commemorating the 750th anniversary
of the founding of the city of Koenigsberg/Kaliningrad.
While the rest of the Iowa State group has returned, Prater is staying in Russia
through a Fulbright Fellowship.

BRUSH UP YOUR SHAKESPEARE - This must have truly been a chance of a
lifetime. After all, one Iowa State theatre student postponed graduation for
an entire semester so that he could participate. Another student put off looking
for a job to travel to Scotland, while a third is headed overseas just days
after graduating.
"To say that the final thing we got to do as students is this world-wide
festival is pretty special," said Scott Morehead, the student who delayed
graduating. "You say the name Edinburgh Festival and everyone in theatre
knows about it."
Morehead, along with fellow performing arts majors Kevin Geiken and Melanie
Snow, traveled to the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland this past August. The three
represented the entire cast of ISU Theatre's production of "The Complete
Works of William Shakespeare - 'Abridged.'"
Learn how the ISU Theatre trio rapped "Othello" and performed "Julius
Caesar" in just 10 seconds on-line at www.las.iastate.edu/newnews/theatre0822.shtml.
