From the Director
Welcome back to a new year of lots of International activities!
I want to invite you all to come to the Study Abroad Fair www.studyabroad.iastate.edu/SAF/fair.html,
Thursday, September 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Great Hall, Memorial Union.
"Featuring exhibits and representatives from a number of both ISU and non-ISU
programs to Study, Work or Volunteer abroad." Please tell all your students
about this opportunity and come by yourself to see all the great international
programs that are available to our students. If you have a program that should
be promoted please let me know about it so that we can put out material at the
LAS table for you.
We also encourage you to use this newsletter to inform colleagues about international
programs, activities and opportunities in which you are involved. Send short
announcements with links to web page links to Dave Gieseke dgieseke@iastate.edu.
On the homepage of the LAS International Program you will now find some links
to International Program alumni blogs at www.las.iastate.edu/students/international/home1.shtml.
These are really wonderful and can be an inspiration to students thinking of
doing international work. The pictures are also wonderful and makes one feel
that all the work we are doing is really worthwhile and important.

News
JOURNEY TO SOUTH AFRICA – William David and his fellow members
of the Ames Piano Quartet have performed throughout the world. A couple of years
ago, the Iowa State resident chamber ensemble even performed in Cuba.
But nothing prepared David and the other Iowa State musicians for what they
experienced in South Africa.
"Cuba wasn't nearly as poor or desolate as South Africa," David said.
"In Cuba, the students we worked with had well trained music teachers and,
despite the poor equipment they had, the kids could really play the string instruments
and piano. In Cape Town there were very few decent instruments," he continued.
"Most of the students we worked with didn't know how to read music. The
facilities were pretty primitive."
The Ames Piano Quartet (David, Mahlon Darlington, George Work and Jonathan Strum),
together with two faculty in the Department of Music's vocal division, Donald
Simonson and Mary Creswell, were invited to perform concerts and teach in Cape
Town, South Africa.
