LAS International On-Line is the bi-monthly on-line publication

international activities within the College including international studies,
study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS - Some of our outstanding alumni
who have made a mark in international business, diplomacy, education, and work
with NGO's have suggested that we greatly expand the hands-on opportunities
for our students. Please contact me or Dave
Gieseke with any opportunities with which you are familiar so that we can
recruit and advise students better on internships, volunteer, or paid work.
I will lead off by recommending IRIS.
Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS) is a non-profit, non-religious
organization founded in 1993 and located in Ames. Its mission is to promote
international education, development, and peace through rural initiatives.
IRIS offers ISU students the chance to get involved with such things as event
planning, interacting with and tutoring Nigerian high school students, and office
work at the headquarters of IRIS. These can be volunteer or part-time paid assignments,
and can be certified as internships for those students in programs where internships
are encouraged.
IRIS is also looking for host families for Nigerian high school students (one
semester or whole year) for future years.
The organization is headed by Bob Anderson, former Iowa Lt. Governor and Director
of the Iowa Peace Institute. I have known Bob for many years and he is a very
dedicated, serious leader in the area of international understanding and peace.
He has managed several State Department and United States Information Agency
programs in several countries including Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Bulgaria, Africa, China and Korea.
ISU graduate Sara Birkenholz, who is a part-time project assistant for the LAS
International Programs, is the project manager for outreach and coordination
with this initiative to involve ISU faculty, students, and staff more with IRIS
activities.
Please encourage students or faculty/staff to contact Sara at sara@iris-center.org.
More information is available at the IRIS web site www.iris-center.org.

HE KEEPS GOING AND GOING – Technically, Young Kihl is on Iowa
State's phased retirement plan.
"I would like to complete my career as a teacher, scholar and researcher,"
said the professor of political science is a year away from retirement.
By the looks of things he's accomplishing just that. His latest book,
one of 15 he has written in his distinguished career, came out earlier this
year to critical acclaim.
"Transforming Korean Politics: Democracy, Reform and Culture is
a magisterial work from an authoritative senior scholar," writes C.S. Eliot
Kang of Northern Illinois University.
Covering developments through the 2004 elections, Kihl shows in his book how
the South Korean government and society have been shaped not only by the dynamics
of modernization, democratization and globalization, but also by their interaction
with the cultural norms of post-Confucian society. He discusses the forces shaping
Korea's political economy and the performance of successive Republic of
Korea (South Korea) governments and highlights the challenges faced by the newly
elected government.
But isn't the only book Kihl has been working on. He is serving as co-editor
of a new manuscript, North Korea: The Politics of Regime Survival,
which is scheduled to be published later this year.
Learn more about Young Kihl's latest books and two new awards on-line at www.las.iastate.edu/newnews/kihl1017.shtml.
