LAS International On-Line is the bi-monthly on-line publication of the International Programs of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. LAS International is part of LAS' on-going efforts to coordinate all aspects of international activities within the College including international studies, study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.

Events

LATIN AMERICAN EVENTS - College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean Michael Whiteford, will speak on "Patterns of Medical Choice in Southern Mexico" Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Whiteford will speak in 1213 Hoover Hall beginning at 4 p.m. He is scheduled to give perspectives and observations of the medical opportunities in southern Mexico.

DON QUIJOTE FILM FESTIVAL - The fourth and final film in the Don Quixote Film Festival will be shown Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. in 1115 Pearson Hall. There is no admission fee and the public is invited.

"Lost in La Mancha" is a 2002 documentary, which captures director Terry Gilliam's attempt to his film "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" off the ground.

REEES EVENTS - A series of events will be sponsored by the Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian (REEES) Studies Program. These include:

  • Nov. 9: Festival of Slavic Cinema - "Kolya," 303 Pearson Hall, 6 p.m. A 1996 Czech Republic film.
  • Nov 16: Elena Karpova, assistant professor of textile and clothing, "Consumers in Transition Economies: Clothing Consumption and Attitudes Toward Appearance in Contemporary Russia." Location to be announced, 4 p.m.
  • Nov 16: Festival of Slavic Cinema - "Divided We Fall," 303 Pearson Hall, 6 p.m. Another Czech Republic movie, this one was filmed in 2000.

Study Abroad

SUMMER JOURNEYS - The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will sponsor two study abroad trips this summer - one to Brazil and a second to China.

Multicultural Student Services will sponsor a 17-day tour (July 10-27) to Brazil, including two weeks in Bahia, the cultural heartland of Brazil and ending with three days in Rio de Janeiro. Additional information is available on-line at www.las.iastate.edu/students/international/brazil.shtml.

Academic and Career Services will sponsor "Global Careers and the Culture of China" May 10-25. The study tour of China includes an opportunity to network with international employers along with tours, presentations and cultural events.
