Guidelines for College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Humanities and Social Sciences Research Grants

Purpose
The purpose of these grants is to provide “seed money” to begin research or scholarship that is expected to continue developing and to attract funding from other sources.

Eligibility
Any LAS assistant professor in the humanities or social sciences may apply for these grants.  Lecturers, adjunct, visiting and temporary faculty are not eligible.  Individuals who have received a University Research Grant or an earlier LAS Research Grant are not eligible.  Collaborative projects, especially those involving more than one discipline, are encouraged and will receive high priority provided that the principal investigators involved meet the eligibility criteria.  The roles of the co-PIs should be clearly elaborated.

Use of Funds
Applications for up to $15,000 will be considered.  The following categories are within the guidelines of these grants:  equipment, hourly labor, graduate and undergraduate research assistantships, supplies, services, and domestic travel which is essential to the research.  Not supported are faculty or technical salaries, computer time for routine data analysis, travel to professional meetings, and computers that are used for standard word processing or other general office use.

Applications
Applications should include a brief description of the work to be done (not to exceed 3 pages single spaced, no font less than 12 points, 1 inch margins) that include the guiding hypothesis or idea, references to relevant literature in the field, the approach to examining the hypothesis or idea, what information will be gathered, and how it will be analyzed and interpreted.  In addition, the relationship of the work to be accomplished with the requested funds to the PI’s longer term research objectives should be noted.  A preliminary plan for seeking subsequent funding should be stated briefly.  Budgetary details should also be attached and each item should be briefly justified in terms of the proposed work.  The application should also include a brief CV.
