Brief Bio

Dr. Michael Whiteford is professor of anthropology and the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University. As dean, Dr. Whiteford oversees Iowa State's largest college with more than 7,000 majors among 22 departments, one professional school and 14 cross-disciplinary programs. The college's faculty members teach approximately 60 percent of all student credit hours at Iowa State.

Dr. Whiteford's research interests focus on alternative curing practices and health-care decision-making processes. His geographic area of specialty is Latin America, and he has worked in Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. Dr. Whiteford's research results have been published in journals such as Medical Anthropological Quarterly, Human Organization, Medical Anthropology, and Social Science and Medicine. He is co-author (with John Friedl) of an introductory anthropology textbook entitled The Human Portrait. With his brother, he edited Crossing Currents: Continuity and Change in Latin America, a volume published by Prentice-Hall, Inc. From 1993 to 2007 Dr. Whiteford was the editor of the quarterly Society for Applied Anthropology Newsletter.

Dr. Whiteford holds a Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley (1972).
