Spring Break in Brazil

Bahia & Rio de Janerio

March 13-24, 2008

This program will allow students the opportunity to study and explore aspects of the Brazilian culture through a twelve-day experience in Bahia, Northeastern Brazil, ending with three days in Rio de Janeiro. The curriculum will focus on issues such as history, environment, religion, arts, race and ethnicity, social issues, land reform, and others. Learning activities will consist of lectures, cultural activities, and day excursions focusing on the various program themes.

Itinerary

Bahia - The Land of Happiness
Welcome to Bahia, the cultural heartland of Brazil. Bahia has an ethnic mixture of European, African and indigenous people and is considered by many the land of happiness.

While in Bahia, you will:

  • Explore Latin America's largest and best-preserved complex of colonial architecture

  • Study the Africa influence on the Brazilian religion and culture
  • Visit 500-year-old churches with exuberant gold-leafed Baroque
  • Experience traditional dances such as Capoeira, Maculele, and others
  • Take part in traditional dance and percussion workshops
  • Learn about political, social, and economic issues as they relate to Bahia and Brazil
  • Travel by boat to the exuberant island Boipeba, an environmentally protected area

Rio de Janeiro
Rio is a fascinating city, known worldwide as "cidade maravilhosa" or "the wonderful city."

While in Rio, you will:

Stay in a hotel at the famous Copacabana Beach

Visit Sugar Loaf Mountain, Maracanan soccer stadium, and other famous landmarks

Dine in one of Rio's best BBQ restaurants

Attend a performance of traditional Brazilian music at Rio Scenarium

Program format and themes
The program will consist of lectures, cultural activities, and day excursions, which will explore issues related to the following program themes:

History
Environment
Religion
Race and ethnicity
Literature
Arts
Dance
Economy
Politics
Social justice

Reflective journaling will be utilized to help students process their experiences and track their learning. After the program, students will write a cross-cultural comparative paper reflecting on their experience.

    To apply for the program, students must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or greater. More
