Summer Seminar for Spanish Teachers

Caceres, Spain

June 5 to July 20, 2008

Where does the program take place?
Students will study at the Universidad de Extremadura, an institution located in a small city named Cáceres. With a population of some 75,000 you will experience the charm of life in a provincial city and enjoy the traditional night life that comes from a large and active student population.
Cáceres is located in the region of Extremadura, halfway between Madrid and Lisbon, and has much to offer in terms of historical and cultural attractions. The well-preserved historical center, with most buildings dating from the medieval and renaissance periods, led UNESCO in 1986 to declare it a “World Heritage Site.” Cáceres also is a candidate to be named the Cultural Capital of Europe for 2016!

Where will I study?
The Universdad de Extremadura (UEx) has two locations, one in the old quarter of Cáceres, and a new, American-style campus. Near both locations of the university there are numerous cafes and bars serving inexpensive meals where students go to eat tapas, sit and talk, or dance and listen to music.

Classes are taught by UEx faculty who are among the most well-known in Spain. The campus also boasts libraries, information technology centers, sports and fitness facilities, restaurants, student centers and other significant buildings.

Spanish Teachers

What will I study?
Participants will study a program designed especially for Spanish Teachers. Three graduate credits will be earned by studying:

Spanish culture and history

Techniques and activities for oral and written
communication

Spanish education system

Conversational skills will also be emphasized. Conversation groups with local residents will be organized.

Local school visits and guided tours of historic Cáceres are included as part of the program.

Where will I live?
Students will live with host families and enjoy full board: meals, laundry, cleaning, utilities and other amenities. Living with your host family will lead to greater fluency and cultural awareness, and can be one of the best ways to learn about how people interact in their everyday lives.
