LAS International On-Line is the bi-monthly on-line publication of the International Programs of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. LAS International is part of LAS' ongoing efforts to coordinate all aspects of international activities within the College including international studies, study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.

Features
CLIMATE CHANGE - Climate change research has caught the world's attention of late. In October, for example, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore.

Yet developing countries - especially African nations - are far behind in their study of climate change and its local effects. That's why for a decade Bill Gutowski, professor of geological and atmospheric sciences, has been helping build a weather and climate research community in Africa.

Gutowski has a personal interest in helping African climate researchers, but he said the African climate also could affect North America.

"There are ways the Sahara is relevant to us here in the United States," Gutowski said. "All the weather systems and climatic patterns that revolve around West Africa, in particular, actually have a direct connection with us here."

News
TOP TEN – A study by Jill Pruetz, associate professor of anthropology, has been included in Wired News' "Top 10 Scientific Breakthroughs of 2007." Pruetz's work with chimpanzees in Senegal placed second on the list.

Study Abroad
PANAMA JOURNEY - "Sustainable Development and Creative Photography in the Tropics" is an intensive, month-long academic program offered in May 2008 for students in any major to study broad issues and challenges of sustainable development in Panama. International studies majors who have chosen a tropical module in "Global Environmental Issues," a geographical module in "Latin America" or Spanish language study can fulfill some of their course requirements through this program. Applications are extended to January 18. Learn more on-line at www.agron.iastate.edu/courses/agron446 .

Exchange Programs
GERMANY TODAY – Offered by the German Academic Exchange Service, "Germany Today" focuses on the topic of "Getting Students Mobile: The German and European Experience in International Education" and will be held June 22-28, 2008.

The program is designed for a group of up to 20 distinguished United States and Canadian residents, typically senior administrators in positions related to graduate education, policy makers in national and state governments, organizations, and agencies and other experts in the higher education field.

Applications are due February 22 and additional information can be obtained at gaedeke@daad.org.

Grants & Scholarships
LIBRARY TRAVEL GRANTS - The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida is offering Library Travel Research Grants for summer 2008. These awards are funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and their purpose is to enable faculty researchers from other U.S. colleges and universities to use the extensive resources of the Latin American Collection in the University of Florida libraries. The deadline for applications is March 1.
