LAS International is part of LAS' ongoing efforts to coordinate all aspects of international activities within the College including international studies, study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.

\EMERGING EXPLORER – Anthropologist Jill Pruetz has been selected as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer for 2008, in part for her world-renowned research on savanna chimpanzees in Senegal. The 11 new Emerging Explorers are featured in the February issue of National Geographic magazine.

Awards

STUDENT NOMINATIONS – The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking nominations for the 2008 LAS Student International Excellence Award. This award recognizes outstanding students with majors in the college who have excelled in internationally-focused academic or extra-curricular activities.

Nominations should be directed to Dave Gieseke, 223 Catt Hall, dgieseke@iastate.edu, by Monday, March 10. A nomination template and criteria for the award is on-line at www.las.iastate.edu/international/lasstudentaward.shtml.

Internal Grants
CIP GRANTS – The ISU Council on International Programs is accepting applications for its International Grants Program for 2008-09. The program funds individual and group projects led by faculty and staff to enhance the infusion of international perspectives into the learning, discovery and/or engagement activities of the university.

Applications must be submitted to Penni Bryant at pabryant@iastate.edu by April 11. Please note that this is a change from previous years when applications were accepted in the fall.

TRAVEL AWARD - Iowa State’s Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods is accepting applications for the Butler Travel Fellowship award of approximately $3000. Funds will be used to support graduate-level research in international sustainable agriculture or livelihoods. Applications are due February 25 at susrl@iastate.edu.
